A Review of the Audiovox PPC 4100
The Audiovox PPC 4100 is Audiovox’s first GSM PDA phone. One will find the standard features found on a Windows Mobile PDA phone. Such features include a touch screen, speaker phone, infrared, SD card slot, Pocket Outlook, Pocket Internet Explorer, and Windows Media Player. It is powered by a 400 MHz XScale processor. It weighs in at about 5.57 oz, making it a bit hefty. It has a bar form with a stub antenna. The Battery life includes three hours talk time and about 100 hours standby time. It’s powered by a 1480 mAh Lilon battery. It has an LCD display with 240x320 megapixel resolution. It supports 65,536 colors. As stated before, the operating system is Windows Mobile Professional 2003 Phone Edition. It has 64mb of built in, flash memory.
It also supports multiple languages. It includes infrared, PC sync as well as supporting SDIO and USB connectivity. One can customize graphics and support WAV and MIDI audio formats for use with custom ring tones. One of the more distinguishing features is its touch screen with handwriting recognition.
The Audiovox PPC 4100 runs on a Intel XScale 400MHz processor with 64mb of ROM and RAM. For most users this is more than sufficient, but if one wants to store more than a half dozen or so of MP3s, he will have to make use of the SD/MMC expansion slot. Extras included in the Windows Mobile 2003 package are Microsoft Reader for e-books, WiBackup, MSN Messenger for real-time chatting, as well as a few games.
An added plus about the Audiovox PPC 4100 is that it functions great as an email device. It allows one to access both POP3 and IMAP email accounts. The inclusion of the Office Online utility allows one to sync messages, calendars, and contacts with the office computer.
Its tri-band GSM 850/1800/1900 MHz PPC supports world-roaming GSM, but its major drawback is that it lacks Bluetooth capabilities. This means that the user must put the screen to their face, use speaker phone, or use one wired headset. It also lacks Wi-Fi support. Other than a few drawbacks, the Audiovox PPC 4100 turns out to be what anyone would expect from Audiovox - A standard PDA phone with many plus points and a few drawbacks.
