Kevin Rose spoke at TheNextWeb conference in Amsterdam two days ago regarding digg’s plans to expand. He revealed a few ideas that will be implemented in a period of time ranging from 6 to 12 months. One of the most requested features by the community was adding a pictures section. They’re also planning to expand into product reviews and more diverse topics.
Another interesting thing he talked about is increasing the level of personalization for each user. It will show popular stories based on your interest (stories that you dugg). If it’s being implemented exactly as it sounds, the power of a front page story could be even less than it is now. The users that are trying to game digg do that because of the amount of traffic delivered to their website if they manage it through. By splitting that, the “gamers” will decrease too.
However, they’ll need a better organization of the categories. The main categories, News, Videos and Podcasts are well organized, but the news subcategories are not. The Sports section is too expanded for an almost dead section, whilst the Entertainment one isn’t.
It remains to be seen what will happen in the future. Until now, I have passed through two major digg updates and they didn’t let me down so far.
