iTunes and Universal no longer together

iTunes, Apple’s popular music share service just might lose one of its main media providers. Rumor has it that Universal, one of the world’s biggest music businesses, decided not to renew their contract with Apple. For now users are safe and can still buy music trough iTunes as a month-to-month contract while Universal exists. But if they don’t do anything about it quick, Apple could run out of tracks to sell.

There is a wide number of reasons why Universal could choose not to continue their partnership with Apple, reasons of which I mention only the refusal to pay royalties for every iPod sold and users’ latest antipathy against DRM. Or simply Universal was trying to attack the monopoly iTunes has at the moment over the digital music market. In some ways this is a risky move considering the success predicted for Apple with the launch of iPhone and the new version of OS X.

I’m really curious to see Steve Jobs’ response to this.
