Kaleidoscape – Another Format War

Oh boy. Another format war? If Kaleidoscape has it’s way, you bet. Believing it’s line of overpriced 1080p DVD players have far superior resolution than the current king of the next generation hill (Blue-Ray), Kaleidoscape is willing to step over the bodies of one HDDVD player after another and challenge BlueRay for the DVD prize.

They claim that with only 1/10th of all movies only available on Blue Ray, the fat lady hasn’t even sung yet on a high resolution format. They believe that with the 1080p Player and 1080p Mini Player can not only steal the crown right off the king’s head, but that the game has only just begun. Who cares that only the uber-rich is willing to pony up $3-4,000 for a DVD player or that all the studios are on board with Blue Ray. And with an audience that has either been burned out over petty format wars or has been burned after buying a useless DVD player with a dead format, well, they’ll come around, right?

Still, with such features as a Sigma Designs Gennum VXP chip, 10-bit processing and full support for Dolby Digital, DTS, MPEG and PCM audio formats, it would’ve been nice if their timing had been better – they just may have had a shot at it.
