What Is A Download Manager?
A download manager is a computer program that is dedicated to the task of downloading files from the Internet, that is, for downloading files from a remote computer to a local computer provided they are connected to each other by the Internet. Sometimes, a download manager can also be used to upload files from one computer to another.
As the name implies, a download manager is used to manage downloads by providing greater control to users. Users can use download managers to maintain a queue of the files they wish to download, resume downloads, pause downloads, and they can even use the download managers to schedule their downloads. So, download managers are useful for an active Internet user whether he or she is using a dial-up connection or a broadband connection. A dial-up user can use a download manager to automatically start downloading the files at night when the traffic is low, and a broadband user can use a download manager to speed up the download process as the application can split a large files into smaller files that are downloaded in parallel. This results in an increase in the download speed.
Some of the common features available in download managers are the following:
- Ability to download files even with poor connections
- Ability to pause a download while downloading a large file
- Ability to resume a paused or broken download so that the work completed is not lost
- Ability to schedule downloads, that is, automatically start downloading at a preset time and hang up the connection upon completion
- Ability to download multiple files simultaneously by handling different connections
Download managers can even be used to automatically navigate a site and download prespecified content at regular intervals. A download manager can limit bandwidth usage so that other Internet activities are not slowed down. Some download managers even support checksums, metalink, and an XML file-listing mirror.
So, download managers are used to give greater control to the user while downloading and uploading files, and they are loaded with great features to enhance user experience.
