What is a floppy disk?

Floppy disks are portable magnetic storage devices.

3.5" floppy disks do not "flop", but if you take the protective storage cover off, the disk platter inside is quite "floppy".

Floppy disks are not as fast as hard disk drives, nor do they store as much information. Their use mainly exists in moving data from one computer to the next.

At one time, 8" and 5.25" floppy disks were the standard. 3.5" floppy disks are now standard. Early 3.5" floppy disks stored 720KB of data. High Density 3.5" disks are now the standard and they store 1.44MB of data.

Floppy disks are also referred to as floppies and diskettes.

Floppy disks have largely been replaced with CD's, DVD's, and USB flash drives.
