What is a HDTV Receiver?
A HDTV receiver is essentially a device that receives and decodes high definition TV signals. HDTV receivers are needed along with a High Definition Ready TV set to view high definition programming. Sometimes an HDTV receiver is also referred to as an HDTV tuner or HDTV decoder.
One of the first questions you should ask yourself before purchasing an HDTV receiver is whether your HDTV already has a receiver built in. Usually, your TV will state that it has a built in receiver or tuner. If your HDTV does not have a receiver built in, it will state that it is HD Ready.
Another question you should ask is whether you plan on watching high definition TV being directly broadcasted from the TV station or will you be acquiring the HDTV signal from your cable TV or satellite TV provider. Most of the time, many cable and satellite TV providers can provide you with a set top box that also includes an HDTV receiver. Most cable or satellite TV companies allow you to rent these set top boxes for only a few dollars per month. In addition, you should know that many DVR's such as TiVo, include an HDTV receiver with many of their devices. This way you don't need to go out and purchase a receiver to record, watch or store your high definition programs.
Besides figuring out whether your TV already has an HDTV receiver or if your cable or satellite company can provide you with one, if you are thinking on buying an HDTV receiver, you should know about the many features available.
While all HDTV receivers allow you to switch from high definition broadcasts back to standard TV broadcasts with ease. There are some HDTV receivers that require you to manually switch back and forth. This can be very inconvenient.
Another great feature that you should look for is the ability to hook up components to your HDTV receiver. Look for receivers that have outputs for HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) capability, S-Video and digital audio, this way you don't have to buy additional wires or cables to hook up state of the art audio, and multimedia components. If you are interested in having parental controls, most receivers include this control. If you are planning on hooking your HDTV receiver into a terrestrial or roof top antenna, make sure the process and installation will be easy.
A HDTV receiver will help you enjoy your high definition programming and will usually add features and functions to your TV.
