How do I Open RAR Files?
RAR is a very popular alternative to Zip for file compression. Microsoft Windows doesn't ship with an application to open RAR files, but there are some great tools for managing RAR files which you can easily download and install.
The two tools to open RAR files which we recommend are 7-Zip and WinRAR.
7 Zip
7-Zip is an open-source Windows utility for manipulating archives. Its features include:
- High compression ratio in new 7z format with LZMA compression and self-extracting capabilities
- Extraction and compression of BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP, and 7z
- Extraction of Z, RAR, RPM, NSIS, LZH, ISO, DEB, CAB, CHM, CPIO, and ARJ
- Compression ratio 2-10% better than PKZip and WinZip (for ZIP and GZIP formats)

- Integration with Windows Shell
- Powerful File Manager and command line version
- Localizations for 63 languages.
WinRAR
WinRAR is a powerful archive manager and compression tool that can be downloaded for a fee. However, its developers offer a free trial version which can be used for 40 days.
WinRAR also has the capability to back up data and reduce the sizes of large email attachments. It can also decompress RAR, ZIP, and other files archived using various formats. This means it supports most if not all popular compression formats including ARJ, ACE, BZIP2, CAB, GZIP, ISO, LZH, TAR, UUE, Z, and 7-Zip. WinRAR also gives users the ability to create new archives in both the RAR and ZIP file formats.
