A lot goes into designing a webpage but the task does not have to be as complicated and impossible as you may think. With the right level of dedication and the correct usage of web structures, even the most inexperienced of computer users can become a mediocre web designer. In this article, we will lay out the various aspects that go into designing and creating a unique webpage that you can use for your personal needs, business prospects, or anything else that you would like to use a webpage for.
Content
The main thing that you should focus on when designing a webpage is the content. Content is key to the success of any webpage, whether it be a blog, profile, or business presence. The content must reflect the underlying reason for the webpage’s existence but also be worded in such a way that grabs the reader’s attention. It is also extremely important to configure your content to fit the needs of SEO (search engine optimization), a process that will cause your webpage to be ranked higher in search engines and other web directories.
Layout
Once your content is typed up in a word processor, you can begin to structure your actual webpage. A proper layout must conform to your specific webpage needs and allow the reader to access your other webpages without having to look for them. Things like content and ad positions, navigational menus, and page structure all go into the overall layout of your webpage. It is essential to place your more important information, such as a business’s top service, in a location on your webpage where it will not only be seen but will also attract your readers to it. Templates are great for layouts as they allow you to skip the entire coding process that goes into making a webpage. The template can be reused for all of your website’s pages.
Homepage
After you have decided how you are going to structure your webpage/website, you should start setting up individual pages. The first page that you should start with is your homepage as this is the first page that your visitors will see when they come to your website. The homepage should be a summary of the rest of your webpages. The homepage should include your most important information such as top services or products, upcoming events, a brief introduction to your website, and links to other pages.
About Us
Once your homepage is completed, you should focus on your About Us page. The About Us page is a longer version of the introduction that you placed on your homepage. The About Us page should include at least several paragraphs explaining what your website is for, how it started out, and the plans for the future. The rest of the About Us page should consist of a biography and picture of the website’s creator and/or a list of the people who have contributed or continually contribute to the website’s success.
Contact Page
When your About Us page is complete, you need to design a Contact Page. The Contact Page will be similar to your About Us page but rather than giving your visitors a history lesson, this page will be entirely about contacting the creator of the website or other representatives that you have assigned to communicating with your visitors. Links to private pages for each representative would be a professional method of structuring your Contact Page but this isn’t necessarily required. A small form that allows for visitors to send you or your website an email would suffice.
Color Schemes
Now that all of your pages are finished, you need to go back through all of your pages and change the colors to be more appealing to visitors. By using a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor, you can skip the coding process altogether by treating your webpage like a MS Word document. Everything on your website can be assigned a specific color including the words, background, and even the scroll bar. You may also be interested in adding a background image to your website rather than just having one color.
Banners and Links
Finally, you should consider adding banners and links to your webpages. Banners will allow you to attract attention to your content, look more professional, and give you the opportunity to make some money by adding someone else’s banner to your site. Links are also good to have throughout your webpages because they connect your visitors to everything else that your website has to offer.
