How to Format a Floppy Disk

A floppy disk is a media storage device that has been used in computers since the mid-1970s. Modern floppy disks measure 3 ½ inches diagonally and are both read and written to by a Floppy Disk Drive (FDD). While floppy disks are rarely used by modern computers and have had little to no motherboard support as of 2010, they are still used for some applications and can be accessed via external USB devices.

How To Format A Floppy Disk

In order to format a floppy disk, or erase its contents, users can insert the floppy disk, open the Start Menu, and click on My Computer. From here, the user can right-click the floppy disk icon, select “Format”, and click “Start” on the menu that appears. The disk will then format for several seconds while all the contents are erased; this does not usually take long because floppy disks do not hold much information. When the formatting process is complete, the user can close all windows and either remove the floppy disk from the Floppy Disk Drive or store more information on the disk by dragging and dropping files into the floppy disk icon in the My Computer window.

Applications

While floppy disk drives depend on a form of magnetic tape, they can be used for many of the same purposes as other media storage devices, such as flash memory devices. However, while modern floppy disks are capable of storing several hundred megabytes of data, they are still no match for more modern storage devices. Floppy disks were once used for storing software, text files, audio files, and even operating systems, but are now used mostly for backups, text files, and transferring data between two or more devices.
