How to Mix Songs Together for Free
A remix is an audio clip that is made by combining multiple songs together and/or adding special effects. Remixes are very common in the rap and R&B genres, but are also found in other types of music such as country and rock, and have existed since music was first recorded on vinyl records. While DJs, radio hosts, and famous musicians, create remixes, anyone who has a decent audio editing software can also make them. To make the search for free audio editors easier, several have been listed below:
WavePad
WavePad is an audio editor that works with both the Windows and Mac OS X operating systems and can support the wav, mp3, vox, gsm, wma, real audio, au, aif, flac, and ogg audio formats. WavePad records and edits audio files and allows users to insert a virtually endless number of sound effects and audio clips into a single file. WavePad is, first and foremost, a commercial software that professionals use to produce high quality music and background noises for movies. There is a free version of WavePad that contains nearly all of the same features and allows users to create their own remixes.
Audacity
While WavePad is a good audio editor, Audacity is often referred to as the best free audio editing software available. Like WavePad, Audacity records new audio clips as well as modify existing ones. Also, like WavePad, every Windows operating system, Mac OS X, and Linux support Audacity. However, Audacity contains many more tools that allow users to specifically blend two or more audio clips together. For example, Audacity lists each audio clip that has been opened or created in a vertical line-up and allows users to not only select pieces of an audio clip that they wish to modify, but to also drag-and-drop those pieces into other audio clips or into a different position within the same clip.
Wavosaur
Wavosaur is similar to WavePad and Audacity, but is much smaller in comparison. Wavosaur was specifically designed to be a compact audio editor that contains the most essential tools to allow a user to manipulate audio clips, but does not contain the additional features found in commercial audio editing software. Wavosaur does, however, have many advanced features, the Windows operating system supports it, and it does not have to be installed on the user’s computer in order to run, making it ideal for users who travel frequently.
