For the most part, when an iPod Touch freezes up, a mild reset can be done where the iPod simply restarts. This typically fixes the problem. To do this, press the home button for ten seconds and the Apple logo will appear on the screen. Once the iPod loads, it can be used as if nothing was wrong. This is similar to how a reset is done on a computer by pressing the power button for a few seconds.
Resetting Settings on the iPod
Should that not correct the problem with the iPod, the next step is to reset settings. To do this, click settings and then general. There is a reset button on the screen. Click this and there will be the option to reset all settings. Click this. What this does is erase any settings that had been added, but it keeps the media intact. If this doesn’t work, go back to the reset page and click the “erase all content and settings.” This will swipe the iPod clean..
Resetting the iPod Software
There are instances where the problem is not the settings on the iPod, but instead, the software that is connected to the iPod. When iTunes updates, it checks to see if the iPod has the latest version of software. If it does, it leaves it alone. If it doesn’t, it prompts the user to install the newest version. This software is required to configure with the latest versions of iTunes. Sometimes, though, there is an error when using the software, so resetting it back to the previous version is an effective way of putting a clean slate on the iPod.
It is important that the latest version of iTunes is on the computer to ensure that the software configures properly. Using the USB device, connect the iPod to the computer. Once the iPod lights up as if it were charging, select the iTouch on the list of devices that pops up on the iTunes screen. Press summary and then the restore option.
It’ll provide the option to do a back up. Unless a back up was already done very recently, do this. Now that it is backed up, click the restore button when the prompt appears. It should not take too long to restore and when it is done, the display will appear with the Apple logo. This is a successful factory restore of the iPod Touch. However, because this removes everything, it is important to do this step last rather than first.
