How to Transfer Bookmarks
Have you just bought a new computer and are scared of finding yourself having to manually input the addresses of your old bookmarks? Or would you simply like to share your bookmarks with a friend? Not to worry, either way – just follow the instructions below, which are specific to Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Transfer methods in other web browsers may vary slightly.
How to Transfer Bookmarks in Internet Explorer
- Launch Internet Explorer on the computer that you would like to export your bookmarks from.
- Press <Ctrl>+I to drop the Favorites menu down.
- Click on the downwards pointing arrow, next to the “Add to Favorites…” button.
- Select “Import and Export…” from the menu that has just dropped down.
- Click “Export to a file” and hit the <Enter> key.

- Click on the checkbox next to “Favorites” and hit the <Enter> key.
- Select the bookmarks that you would like to export (hint: hold down the <Ctrl> key while clicking to select multiple bookmarks/folders) and hit the <Enter> key. If you would like to export all of your bookmarks, just hit the <Enter> key.
- Take a note of the file path that has been given and hit the <Enter> key.
- Hit the <Enter> key.
- Transfer the file that was exported to the file path that you noted down earlier to some form of removable storage media. Insert the media into the computer that you would like to import your bookmarks to.
- Launch Internet Explorer on the computer that you would like to import your bookmarks to.
- Press <Ctrl>+I.
- Click on the downwards pointing arrow, next to the “Add to Favorites…” button.
- Select “Import and Export…”
- Click “Import from a file” and hit the <Enter> key.
- Click on the checkbox next to “Favorites” and hit the <Enter> key.
- Click “Browse…” and locate the file on your removable storage media. Hit the <Enter> key twice.
- Select a destination folder for your favorites and hit the <Enter> key.
- Hit the <Enter> key.
- Congratulations – you have successfully transferred your bookmarks!
How to Transfer Bookmarks in Mozilla Firefox
- Launch Mozilla Firefox on the computer that you would like to export your bookmarks from.
- Press <Ctrl>+<Shift>+B to open up your Bookmarks Library.
- Select the bookmarks that you would like to export (hint: hold down the <Ctrl> key while clicking to select multiple bookmarks/folders).
- Press <Alt>+I, continuing to hold <Alt>, and press B.
- Take a note of where you are saving the file and press <Enter>.
- Transfer the file that was exported to the file path that you noted down earlier to some form of removable storage media. Insert the media into the computer that you would like to import your bookmarks to.
- Launch Mozilla Firefox on the computer that you would like to import your bookmarks to.
- Press <Ctrl>+<Shift>+B.
- Select a destination folder for your bookmarks.
- Press <Alt>+I, continuing to hold <Alt>, press R and then C.
- Locate the file on your removable storage media. Hit the <Enter> key.
- Congratulations – you have successfully transferred your bookmarks!
