HTC Touch
Mere moments after Apple announced their much anticipated iPhone with all of its touch screen goodness, HTC made an announcement of their own. They too had a touch screen phone much like the Apple iPhone – only theirs does not pack in nearly the amount of "cool factor" as Apple's device does. Dubbed the HTC Touch, this phone's characteristic feature is its multi touch touch screen that actually works surprisingly well. Is it as good as Apple's device? Not really – but it doesn't cost as much either.
The HTC Touch is available in two distinct flavors. One, the original, is designed for the GSM network and is, unfortunately, bound to the European and Asian markets by only supporting three bands. It can be enabled for roaming in America though. Furthermore, it offers no 3G support.
The other HTC Touch model is newer and specifically designed for the American market as a direct competitor to the iPhone for those using the CDMA network. The device, unlike the GSM model, offers 3G support over the EVDO rev. 0 data network.
Aside from the network differences outlined above, the two HTC Touch models are exactly the same. Both measure in at approximately four inches by two inches by half an inch. Both weigh 112 grams. Both offer up to five hours of talk time and two hundred hours of standby time on a single charge. And both contain the same characteristic 240 pixel by 320 pixel, sixty five thousand color, 2.8 inch touch screen.
The HTC Touch also includes a 2.0 Megapixel digital camera with digital zoom. Also built into the device is a music and video player with expandable memory via microSD card. Furthermore, the HTC Touch supports Wi-Fi Internet access using 802.11b/g and has support for Bluetooth for wireless data transfer. The HTC Touch also features a speakerphone, voice commands, and the plethora of functions and programs that come built in with the Microsoft Windows Mobile for Pocket PCs operating system.
Pros
- 3G support on the newer CDMA phone
- Touch screen is easy to use
- Lots of built in features
- Decent battery life
Cons
- No 3G support on GSM phone
- Not as attractive or as "cool" as the iPhone
- Touch screen not as good as the one on the iPhone
Overall
There are really only three types of people that the HTC Touch is for. The first are those people out there who love to hate Apple for one reason or another. The second is the corporate types who cannot get a deal on the iPhone but can get a deal on an HTC device. And the third are those who are in love with the CDMA network in America and want a device with much of the functionality of the iPhone.
