i-mate Ultimate-8502
In the new series of i-mate’s Ultimate phones, the 8502 stands alone in not coming with a VGA display screen, which may lend you to believe the 8502 is at the bottom of the heap when put up against the other Ultimate phones i-mate is presenting to the public. This may or may not be the case, but after we played around with it, we thought the 8502 was poised to fill a particular niche the other phones in the series might miss.
The Ultimate series seems to be all about great connectivity, and the 8502 is no exception. It features connection to a triple band of UMTS and four bands of GSM. The GSM connection by itself practically ensures that the phone will never go out of range, which will come as a pleasure to those who have been struggling with being out of range of a tower at a crucial moment. It also features HSDPA and HSUPA, to garner your phone broadband cell access, which should make downloads super fast.
One advantage the i-mate Ultimate 8502 might have over its brethren is its lighter construction. The rest of the phones in the series are big and bulky, which may be a turnoff to many users who fear the “Zach Morris” perception of phones. It’s actually a strange direction for the company to take with most others focusing on providing the smallest, most compact devices on the market (see the enormous success of the RAZR from Motorola).
The success of the phone will come or not come, however, in the decision of carriers to offer plans and cheaper prices along with it. The estimated MSRP at this point is above $800, which will leave this phone DOA if not picked up by a major American cell company.
