What is ISDN 2?

 

ISDN, the Integrated Services Digital Network, is a network that provides digital connectivity for the transmission of voice and data files combined with other services over copper wires.

ISDN provides a number of B channels that carry traffic and data to control data flow, signaling and transmitting lines information. The channels and services provided by ISDN are evaluated by the interface that is being used by the customer via the equipment.

ISDN 2 contains BRA (Basic Rate Access), as well as other supplementary services. This service allows two concurrent communications from several applications including speech calls, data transfer files, videoconferencing, etc. ISDN 2 is one of the simplest forms of network connection. This network is primarily used for small CRA and single device connections. ISDN 2 is used by small businesses as well as for residential customers.

ISDN 2 service transmits information, including telephone calls, video conferencing, and Internet access via digital technology. For ISDN 2, a network terminator (NT) needs to be installed at your home or business premises that will allow your digital equipment to work. You can also connect other types of equipment via the NT such as telephones, PCs, fax machines, etc.

Moreover, there are 2 B channels, which can be used concurrently and in parallel. For example, you can browse the net, receive phone calls or, use fax – but, any two lines at a time. Channel B has a speed of 64 Kbps, that can be increased up to 128 Kbps.
