What is ground start?

Ground start is a signaling technique for telephony in which a party gets a dial tone by momentarily grounding one side of a two-wire trunk.

The Ring side of a wire pair is usually the side which is grounded.

Ground start signaling is normally used for telephone lines connected to a PBX.

Most pay phones also use ground start signaling.

The alternative to ground start is loop start.
