Magnetic Bearings

Magnetic bearings use magnetic force to support machine parts without there being any physical contact between the supporting mechanism and the device. The bearings’ magnetic force lifts the supported piece of machinery, permitting it to move while suspended in the air. Unlike traditional bearings, no friction is experienced, which results in significant savings and reduction in maintenance. Magnetic bearings have replaced traditional bearing types such as the ball bearing.

How do Magnetic Bearings Work?

Magnetic bearings are similar to traditional bearings in that they support machinery designed to rotate. Unlike traditional bearings, the magnetic bearing propels the supported machinery in the air eliminating any metal to metal contact. For a magnet bearing to work, it must have a magnetic current that is strong enough to raise the supported piece above the surface of the device. What are the Advantages of Magnetic Bearings?

Magnetic bearings allow supported pieces to move as fast as possible within their designed specifications. They are primarily used in devices that traditional bearings do not work for and alleviate the oil contamination concerns that are associated with traditional bearings. Other advantages include the ability to work in a vacuum, lack of friction, and ability to work without any type of lubricant.

What are the Disadvantages of Magnetic Bearings?

Magnetic bearings are not without their disadvantages. In order for the magnets to make a strong enough field to suspend a piece of machinery, they require a continuous power source. Back-up power systems must be put in place to prevent catastrophic equipment failure in the event of a power outage. As a result, employing magnetic bearings results in greater up front and sustainment costs than traditional bearings in most cases.
