Nokia N-GAGE QD
The Nokia N-GAGE QD is not Nokia's first attempt at creating a multi-purpose mobile device that offers both use as a phone and as a gaming console. The Nokia N-GAGE was announced late in 2002, although it didn't actually enter the market until the fall of 2003. Even though advertising for the Nokia N-GAGE was fierce, it still didn't do as well when it came to sales figure as the GameBoy Advanced did. Nokia didn't take this defeat lightly, and spent time working on a new N-GAGE that would work better than the original. This is where the Nokia N-GAGE QD comes in. It isn't to be thought of as a follow-up to the original. Instead, it is to be considered a less expensive variant with a better design and better functions.
Unlike the original, the Nokia N-GAGE QD measures in at 0.87 by 2.68 by 4.65 inches, and weighs in at 5 ounces. Using the phone during the course of a conversation is easier and quite a bit more comfortable that it was for those who used the original N-GAGE. The new phone's speaker is located on its front side. This allows users to carry on a conversation without having to put the phone's back end up against his or her ear, as they would have had to do with the original, which looked rather strange. The D-pad on the phone has also been redesigned. It responds much easier than it did on the original, and it also eliminates the center click option that users of the original surely hated. A quick start button for playing a game is located right on the phone's face. This is a convenient addition for users who wish to immediately start a game regardless of where they are or what they are doing when the mood strikes. This does away with the need for users to have to peruse various menu options, as they would have had to do when playing games on the original. Changing a game is also quite easy. If a user wishes to stop the game that he or she is playing, and would like to start a different game, it can be done in the blink of an eye. He or she would only need to open up the chunky plastic protector located on the bottom of the case to change games. The Nokia N-GAGE QD doesn't even have to be shut down in order to do so, which many users may find to be a great feature.
The phone may be smaller, and improvements to the way users play games and also carry on a conversation have been made, but there are still some attributes that the Nokia N-GAGE QD lacks. Unlike other similar phones on the market today, users will find that the Nokia N-GAGE QD doesn't come with an MP3 player or an FM radio, it does not offer a tri-band, and also does not offer stereo sound. The lack of stereo could definitely be a feature that users of the original N-GAGE will miss. The original offered a wonderfully deep and melodic sound that greatly improved game play. Now, the Nokia N-GAGE QD's single speaker can actually negatively affect game play, as well as the hands-free mode offered with the phone. The hands-free option on the original N-GAGE was crisp, clear, and loud. However, the speaker sound on the Nokia N-GAGE QD has the tendency to be just a little weak, which can actually make the feature virtually unusable.
The screen on the Nokia N-GAGE QD offers 176 x 208 pixels and also displays 4,096 colors simultaneously. The quality of images viewed on the screen is slightly better than that of the original N-GAGE. There are also 15 levels of backlight available. Time and date, as well as icons that show unread messages and/or missed calls can be displayed on the phone's screen when it is in the standby mode. Instead of showing the time, users can also opt to display any note that he or she wishes on the screen. Games can be played on the system in multiplayer mode through Bluetooth or a wireless high-speed gaming service. The 1.1 version of Bluetooth supports Service Discovery Profile, Generic Access Profile, Dial-Up Networking Profile, Serial Port Profile, Headset Profile, Fax Profile, Generic Object Exchange Profile, Handsfree Profile, File Transfer Profile, and Object Push Profile.
The keypad on the Nokia N-GAGE QD features plastic alphanumerical keys. The gaming key and the joystick are both transparents. The 8-way thumb pad makes navigating through the phones features easy, and so do the 12 telephone buttons. All Operate quite easily and respond the first time they are pressed. There is an orange backlight for the keypad. However, it is a little bit uneven and has some keys on the keypad may not show up well when it is used in the dark. The joystick doesn't have a backlight. The Nokia N-GAGE QD's power button can be found on its right side. Pressing the power button for a prolonged length of time will also turn the device off. Users will find that there is a MMC-card slot located on the bottom of the phones back side. It makes removing the card possible without having to also remove the battery. Be aware that the Nokia N-GAGE QD does not support SD cards, nor will they fit in the given slot. On the top of the back side of the device, users will find the 2.5 mm interface connectors that can be used for a mono headset and/or the phone's battery charger. These connectors are covered with rubber stoppers. Unlike with the original N-Gage, users may be unhappy to learn that the Nokia N-GAGE QD does not come equipped with a mini USB port. In order to connect the device to a computer, the user must use the phone's Bluetooth technology. Users can expect to play games for up to 10 hours on each battery charge. One battery charge also allows users 5 hours of talk time and 11 days of standby mode.
