Processor Speed

The processor speed is the speed in which the CPU can complete a certain amount of cycles per second. This is otherwise known as a Hertz. For example, one Hertz means that one cycle can be completed in one second. A megahertz means that one million cycles can be completed in a second. A gigahertz, the most common form of processor speed, means that one billion cycles can be completed per second.

Typically, a consumer can find a processor that can handle speeds upward of about 2 gigahertz. However, because of the ability to create dual cores or quad cores, suddenly there is a considerable amount of processor speed or clocked speed available to handle applications.

What is Overclocking?

A processor is intended to run at a certain clock rate as mentioned above. However, theoretically, they are able to run even more. However, these are published figures because they require more resources from both the CPU and motherboard and tend to heat up. Therefore, while overclocking is available, it is sometimes dissuaded because of its negative effects.Processor Speed Processor Speed

Regardless, overclocking means that an individual pushes the CPU to reach clock rates of an even faster amount than the company advertised. For example, if it was described as a 1.2 gHz CPU, someone who overclocks it might push the CPU up to about a 1.5 gHz even though this could damage the CPU and motherboard. It is important to have an exceptional cooling system when doing this.

Benefiting the Most From a High Processor Speed

Because the cost of creating a CPU has dropped tremendously, more computers are coming with better CPUs. However, the best way to benefit from a high processor speed is to have a lot of RAM. For example, if one has a high processor speed, but very little RAM, the processor will only work up to that RAM’s ability. Add more RAM and the processor will work more effectively. The best way to make the processor work the most effectively is to add more RAM than the minimum requirement for the processor. Each processor is different and therefore, each one will need different amounts of minimum RAM to run most efficiently. It is because of this that those computers with dual core or quad core processors tend to have higher amounts of available RAM.
