Samsung Instinct-M800
The Samsung Instinct-M800 is the pinnacle of Samsung design as of this writing. It is a candy bar style touch screen device with everything that a user could possibly want. With style and substance, the Samsung Instinct-M800 is poised to be the Korean answer to the dominance that the Apple iPhone 3G will undoubtedly bring to the market. However, unlike the new iPhone, which is designed for consumers and corporations, the Samsung Instinct-M800 will only be targeted to the average users in the United States. Think of it as an updated, more powerful, and better built Glyde (without the full QWERTY keyboard).
Announced in April 2008, the Samsung Instinct-M800 is a dual band CDMA device. This means that it can only be used in the United States as well as a few other places in the world. However, thanks to the technology behind the CDMA network, the Samsung Instinct-M800 has access to high speed data over the 3G EVDO rev.A network. This provides users with scorching fast data transfer for sending and receiving files and browsing websites.
Measuring in at approximately four and a half inches by two inches by half of an inch, the Samsung Instinct-M800 is a fairly large phone – though it is slimmer than the similarly designed Samsung Glyde. The phone weighs 125 grams, making it rather heavy for a device in this market segment.
Although there is currently no data on the standby time for the Samsung Instinct-M800’s battery, the talk time available on a full charge is an impressive six hours.
The front of the Samsung Instinct-M800 is graced with a giant 3.1 inch touch screen. It features a 240 by 432 pixel resolution and a color depth of 262k colors. Unfortunately, for a screen this large, the color depth is not up to par with other high end touchscreen phones on the market.
The Samsung Instinct-M800 also includes a built in 2.0 megapixel digital camera with video capability and a two times digital zoom.
Multimedia features are very well supported on the Samsung Instinct-M800. The built in video and audio player are able to support a huge number of the most popular audio and video formats for playback on the go. The built in 32 MB of memory can also be expanded with microSD cards.
Other features include Bluetooth 2.0 support, a medium sized phone book, an alarm, a calendar, a unit converter, a to-do list, a memo, a stopwatch, a world clock, a calculator, a number of voice commands, a voice recorder, a speakerphone, email support, a full HTML browser, and GPS support.
Pros
- Tons of features
- Slick design
- 3G and GPS support
- Good battery life
Cons
- Some features not up to par with the competition
- Missing the QWERTY keyboard found on the Glyde
Overall
The Samsung Instinct-M800 is a highly impressive device that is everything the Glyde should have been and more. It looks like Samsung finally has a phone that can take on the high end touchscreen devices coming out of the United States and Europe. Well worth a look if you prefer the CDMA networks in America to the GSM networks.
