Skype for Mac
Skype is an instant messaging software that was first designed for Windows based computers. It allows users to send and receive instant messages, SMS based messages, emails, audio calls, and video calls. Skype is able to support multiple users in one conversation and is now available on virtually any type of hardware including Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X-based computers as well as smartphones such as Androids, iPhones, and Blackberries. Skype even allows users with smartphones that have a front facing camera to make video calls to others using Skype on their smartphone or computer with a webcam installed.

Although all versions of Skype provide users with the same features, users must select the version that is most compatible with their hardware and operating system. For Mac users, Skype can be found here. Although Skype uses this page to advertise Skype Premium, a more advanced version of Skype that costs $4.49/month, users can simply click the “Download Skype” button to the left to download Skype For Mac.
Advantages/Disadvantages
Skype is advantageous because it allows users to communicate with each other in a variety of ways such as through video calls, audio calls, instant messages, SMS-based messages, emails, and shared files. Skype also allows users to setup an online phone number that any phone in the world can reach and is available at very low rates (several cents per minute, even with international calls). However, the free version of Skype is slightly limited in what it can do. For example, the free version of Skype does not allow users to participate in group video calls or group screen sharing.
