Sony Ericsson W300i

The Sony Ericsson W300i is one of the many Sony Ericsson phones that offer a Walkman music service, which is amongst the best mobile music systems available. The phone is a neat and compact clamshell design which is both sturdy and will protect your phone from general wear and tear. With dimension of only 90 mm x 47 mm x 24.5 mm, and weighing just 94 grams, this phone is easily slipped into any pocket of bag, and you will hardly notice that it is there. The design of the outer shell allows you to hold the phone comfortably in your hand, and has various grip areas for a secure feel. As with most mobiles in today's market place there are two screen displays, a small monochrome display on the front of the phone, which allows you to view incoming calls and data without opening up the Clamshell. There is also the more detailed and larger internal screen, available when the clamshell is flicked open. The internal screen is a larger 128 x 160 pixel screen which offers the now obligatory 262,000 color variations for that sharper clearer look. The Sony Ericsson W300i covers a range of network types including EDGE, GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800 and GSM 1900, ensuring that you will always have a reliable connection.

The whole feel of the Sony Ericsson W300i is sharp and polished and the navigation system is amongst the easiest to use, whether you decide to use the circular rolling key just under the main screen (and function keys to the side) or you're more traditional numerical keys, either way navigation could scarcely be easier. There are a number of function keys on the outer of the phone, which can be used to activate the camera, adjust the volume, etc. Towards the bottom of the phone you will see the well disguised recharge and USB connection ports, which are built into the outer design. There is also a very useful Bluetooth wireless connection allowing quick and easy interaction and data transfer between your mobile and PC. There is also an Infrared connection for devices which do not support full Bluetooth technology. You are also able to fully synchronize your PC and Mobile for optimum interaction, and the file transfer software allows a quick drag and drop function, much like the PCs of today.

Sony Ericsson have taken a little more care than most with the Internet facility, which can actually handle full sized HTML pages, and makes full use of the screen rather than the distorted view on so many phones today. The connection is both quick and reliable, and offers a great service to users who are constantly on the move and need to keep in touch with news and world events. The Sony Ericsson W300i also offers the now standard SMS, MMS and email messaging facilities which when used in conjunction with the Internet connection allow you to be available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Another useful function of the Sony Ericsson W300i is the ability to connect to a mobile speaker, home stereo or music stand facility which could be helpful in a number of situations, whether relaxing at night with some music, or holding a meeting with one of your colleagues on the mobile.

One of the more visible functions of the Sony Ericsson W300i is the inbuilt camera, with the lens highly visible at the forefront of the clamshell design. The camera supports both still photography as well as short video footage, both of which can be stored on the phone and relayed to other phones via the MMS messaging facility - a speedy and simple function which can be very useful. The camera itself can be used with the clamshell open or closed, as there are function buttons on the outside of the phone. The internal camera option is a little more sophisticated offering the zoom facility, and detailed preview of the scene in focus.

The Sony Ericsson W300i also has a quality Walkman music service which is more than just your standard music MP3 player. Sony Ericsson has made the Walkman system the central selling point for this mobile, and it is easy to see why. The phone allows you to store up to 80 of your favorite tunes on the 256MB memory stick which comes as part of the mobile phone package. You will also receive a USB cable to connect to your PC and the music software to allow you to transfer your favorites to the mobile. You can now take your favorite tunes with you wherever you go. A useful music function button on the outside of the clamshell changes your phone from voice mode to music mode in a second. You are also able to format your own play list, and there is a random shuffle and loop button. The Sony Ericsson W300i also has a standard FM radio in built, but you can also receive traffic reports and special offers via the RDS (Radio Data Support) facility.

The Sony Ericsson W300i also has various personal organizer elements installed which include alarm clock, stop watch, calendar, task list, calculator, note page not to mention the opportunity to choose (and download more where required) from a variety of preinstalled polyphonic ring tones. Sony Ericsson have rally done their homework on the Sony Ericsson W300i and there is a large market for accessories which include Bluetooth ear pieces, music desk stands, portable speakers, home audio system, Bluetooth media centre and a variety of hands free items.

The clamshell shape is becoming very common in the marketplace, however the Sony Ericsson W300i mobile does offer more than just the design and the shape. The Walkman facility makes the W300i stand out from similar looking phones, and will appeal to the mass market (particularly the younger users who see music as a prime component of their mobile phone). The classic colors of silver and black also ensure a broad market appeal and the phone, while unlikely to be a best seller, is sure to appeal to a wide range of mobile users.
