Sony Ericsson Z525a

The Sony Ericsson Z525a comes in the classic clamshell design, which is compact, easy to store and simple to flick up and open. The overall dimensions of the phone are useful 83 mm x 46 mm x 24 mm and it weighs in at 94 grams, which is among the lightest in the market. Sony Ericsson has done well to fill the mobile with so many services, while keeping the weight under the important 100 grams barrier. The phone has both an external LCD display screen with dimensions of 101 x 108 pixels, offering a combination of up to 4096 colors, and a slightly larger internal TFT screen at 128 x 160 pixels, with offers up to 65,563 color combinations. The external display offers the opportunity to see who is calling without opening up the Clamshell, allowing you to accept or reject incoming calls. A very useful 12 MB of built in memory (together with extra facility via an external port) is sufficient to cover the needs of most phone users, whether for business or personal use.

As is common place in the current market the Sony Ericsson Z525a offers both still photography and video facilities, using a built in digital VGA camera. The camera offers a number of services, which are integrated into a simple menu driven system, such as 4x digital zoom which sharpens and enhances the centre of your photographs. There is also a facility to store a number of images in the phones memory, as well as using them as wallpaper when the phone is on standby. The video service also allows you to receive constant streaming via external cams. The Sony Ericsson Z525a supports a number of messaging systems which include SMS, MMS and email to name but a few. The SMS system comes with predictive text (which can be helpful, and very annoying), and a "push to talk" option which allows you to call the message sender at the touch of a button. There is also a voice recorder which is more of a gimmick than anything else, but may be useful in some situations. Overall the messaging system offers you all that you will require to stay in touch with friends, family and the office 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Sony Ericsson Z525a has the latest connectivity software which includes Bluetooth technology, which has a range of 10 meters. The Bluetooth facility will come in very useful when transferring data between phones or from phone to computer, quick, accurate and so simple, and its literally just a few key presses. If there is a problem with the Bluetooth connection, or the device you want to link with is not Bluetooth enabled, there is a great alternative with an Infrared connection, allowing you to link to PCs, Laptops and other enabled devices. There is also the option of using the standard USB support connection, which can fit to all PCs and Laptops. While a little out of date, and slower than Bluetooth and Infrared, it will still get the data across. The Internet offering for the Sony Ericsson Z525a is supported by General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) which allows data to be streamed at 28.8 - 58.6 kbps. This is a very useful package when used in tandem with the WAP 1.2.1 and WAP 2.0 XHTML protocol and makes it very easy to download information from the internet, and ensure you receive the clearest pictures and constant signal strength. This is ideal if you are using your mobile to support your business interests, and need to keep in constant contact with the news and world events. The Sony Ericsson Z525a has fairly unique external antennae which is situated at the top of the phone, and is a strange square shape.

On the lighter side of mobile uses, the Sony Ericsson Z525a comes with a preloaded personal organizer offering a number of different services. There is an alarm clock which many people will find useful in the morning, whether you are at home or away on business. A useful facility is the "business card exchange" which allows you to send and receive full details, including name, telephone number, email, etc, something more for the business fraternity. There is also the basic calendar, contacts system (which holds 500 contact records), stopwatch, timer and calculator. For those constantly on the move, the tasks manager will prove beneficial (this can be loaded from or transferred to another PC device) as a constant reminder of your agenda. The Sony Ericsson Z525a has a good standard conference call system, which allows you to connect more than one call at the same time and have a virtual meeting. The entertainment system includes a selection of pre-installed Java games which can be played on the move, perfect for relaxing or those long distance journeys. As is standard on today's mobile phones there are also a fairly comprehensive music function which covers the MP3 and AAC digital formats. It is very easy to either transfer tunes from your computer (or another phone) or you can download direct from the Internet via the WAP facility. The 12MB of built in memory (with the option to add a memory card for further capacity) is available to store your favorite tunes and the menu for recalling your saved tunes is very simple and takes literally a few seconds to operate.

In summary the Sony Ericsson Z525a is a useful upgrade on the earlier Z series mobiles. Sony Ericsson have added a number of extra facilities and taken on board user feedback from the earlier models. As mobile phones continue to develop, the Sony Ericsson Z525a is up there with the latest models as at release time - although later models have added further functionality and newer technology. For consumers looking for a well designed phone, with a large variety of voice and online services the Sony Ericsson Z525a may be worth considering. The mobile is a very well balanced phone, suitable for both personal and business users.
