Twitter unveiled on Tuesday their plan to generate revenue for their company. In an attempt to enter the realm of e-commerce, Twitter might have happened upon a golden egg that could really provide some considerable income for the company.
It is called @earlybird Exclusive Specials. What this feature does is provide users who opt to follow the Twiter account the opportunity to see deals for different items and events. So, by following the @earlybird account, users will get updates when there are new items available.
The trend Twitter is trying to follow with is one known as “limited-time.” In an effort to persuade people that time is short to get the item, these limited-time offers push for the impulsive buyer. Instead of allowing a buyer to ask, “Do I really need a third iPad,” they just buy it because they don’t want to lose out on not getting it for such a great deal.
The types of items that are going to be made available are wide spread. Twitter hinted that they would be categorizing the type of deals that are sent out to people, but for right now, that hasn’t been discussed very much. But, possible items that could appear are electronics such as an iPad, but also events such as concerts and even necessities like clothes.
Twitter will regulate what deals are made available to the followers and will determine how many they are going to sell. So, if they are dealing in iPads, they will determine how many iPads to sell. One of the things that Twitter has yet to determine is what type of a payment scheme they are going to set up to be compensated.
One of the methods that have been suggested is a fixed price per sale. Another method is the cut of the sale. Twitter hasn’t revealed yet the way in which they are doing things, but they were clear to Twitter followers that they are going to make money from this.
According to the Twitter
blog post, “Our focus will be to try and make these deals interesting and of value to you. We take pride in being selective about the type of deals we highlight and hope they will be an exciting way to start your day.”
This is definitely interesting news for many who use Twitter to sell products. A revenue stream of some sort was bound to be added to Twitter; however, this is definitely an interesting twist that will get some Tweeters very excited. Just follow @earlybird to get access to the early bird specials. And, according to Sean Garrett, a Twitter spokesman, the first @earlybird deal is coming very soon. So, get ready!
