Windows Mobile

For the Internet user on the go, modern mobile computing devices have been a welcome addition to technology manufacturer's line of products. Devices such as PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) and smart phones have exploded in popularity in recent years. These devices now offer a wide range of features in ever-increasingly compact models. These features typically include web browsing, email, RSS feeds, and incorporated mobile phones.

Windows Mobile is the name Windows assigns to its line of operating systems devoted solely to mobile computing devices. Windows Mobile began with the popular PocketPC series in 2002 and evolved into Windows Mobile 2003. The current version is Windows Mobile 5.0.

The ability to seamlessly sync with a home-based personal computer that runs Windows is a large draw for Windows Mobile customers. It can share many programs that run on Windows operating systems, albeit usually on a smaller scale of functionality.windows mobile Windows Mobile

Some notable functions and improvements included in Windows Mobile 5.0:

  • Most controls enabled by using only one hand
  • Outlook Mobile
  • Full Calendar
  • Full Contacts list
  • Hand writing recognition for quick notes
  • Office Mobile including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Internet Explorer
  • Windows Media Player
  • Bluetooth capabilities
  • ActiveSync 4.0

There are two reported planned upgrades for Windows Mobile on the way. Code named "Crossbow," the first upgrade is planned for launch in the first few months of 2007. The second will not be released until 2008 and is rumored to be code named, "Photon." Crossbow is rumored to implement enhanced mobile texting features and business application advances. Photon may incorporate a completely new platform shell.

Currently, there are many add-ons available for Windows Mobile units including games, enhanced security features, GPS software, media, and advanced productivity software both from Windows and third-party distributors.

Popular smart phones that currently run Windows Mobile 5.0 are the Motorola Q, the Palm Treo series (including the powerful 750v), the Dell Axim, and the T-Mobile MDA. The availability of third-party add-ons, the popularity of the Windows XP operating system, and upcoming launch of the Windows Vista operating system are all factors that ensure that there will be no shortage of new mobile devices that run Windows Mobile.

For mobile computing, Windows Mobile offers versatility, functionality, and support when needed. Since Windows remains to be the dominant presence in the computing world, Windows Mobile will remain to be a safe investment for mobile computing and communication needs.
