How to Reset a Dell BIOS Password


Dell Dimension BIOS Password Recovery

The BIOS password may be cleared from a Dell Dimension by moving the password jumper on the motherboard.

The password jumper’s location on a Dell Dimension motherboard can be found by reviewing the Dimension User Guides.

For most Dell Dimension desktops, the steps to reset a BIOS password and clear all CMOS settings are:

  • Locate the 3-pin CMOS password reset jumper on the system board.
  • Remove the jumper plug from pins 1 and 2.
  • Place the jumper plug on pins 2 and 3 and wait approximately 5 seconds.
  • Replace the jumper plug on pins 1 and 2.

Instructions:

  1. Most BIOS password checksums are stored on the Flash ROM. Therefore, many manufacturers display this checksum (often called ‘hash’) on the screen by keying in 3 invalid passwords.
    Example: [CNU1234ABC]
  2. Do not be scared by any system messages such as ‘System Disabled’. Just unplug all power cords, plug them back in, and then restart.
  3. Enter the checksum/hash (without any braces) you see on the screen in the above textbox and click Compute.

Dell jumpers

Dell Optiplex BIOS Password Recovery

The BIOS password may be cleared from a Dell Optiplex by removing the password jumper (PSWD) from the motherboard.

The password jumper’s location on a Dell Optiplex motherboard can be found by reviewing the Optiplex User Guides.

For most Dell Optiplex desktops, the steps to reset a BIOS password and clear all CMOS settings are:

  • Locate the 3-pin CMOS password reset jumper on the system board.
  • Remove the jumper plug from pins 1 and 2.
  • Place the jumper plug on pins 2 and 3 and wait approximately 5 seconds.
  • Replace the jumper plug on pins 1 and 2.

Dell Inspiron BIOS Password Recovery

Each Dell Inspiron has a master password that clears the BIOS password. Call Dell Technical Support at (800)624-9896 to get this number.

Dell Technical Support will request the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the bottom of the Inspiron.

If the current user is not the original Inspiron owner, Dell will transfer the used Inspiron’s registration from the original owner with only the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the tag on the laptop.

To transfer a used Dell Inspiron’s registration, fill out the Transfer of Ownership form on Dell’s web site.

Dell Latitude BIOS Password Recovery

Christophe Grenier wrote a program that calculates the master BIOS password for Dell Latitudes from the Service Tag number. That program is available here.

If a Latitude cannot be booted to run this program, call Dell Technical Support at (800)624-9896 to get the master password.

Dell Technical Support will request the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the bottom of the Latitude.

If the current user is not the original Latitude owner, Dell will transfer the used Latitude’s registration from the original owner with only the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the tag on the laptop.

To transfer a used Dell Latitude’s registration, fill out the Transfer of Ownership form on Dell’s web site.

    people over complicate this problem, i had this issue with my dell vostro 1510, and I could not find a straight solution anywhere.

    in a PC TOWER, you can unplug the power supply from the motherboard and remove the little battery and it will reset it.

    in dell laptops there is no battery or at least not one you will have access too, usually at the back of a dell laptop there are 2 pieces you can open, Open them with a screwdriver.

    unplug from power, remove the battery.

    Now, there should be a skinny cable running from a place you cant access, the end of this cable have a white plastic thing on it and it connects to the mother board.

    Unplug it from the motherboard, wait 5 seconds, plug it back in, WALLA.

    your bios should be reset now.

    I had a bit of trouble finding out this information so I will write down exactly what I had to do on a D400. The chip is a 24C02 and is located under a black sticker next to the pcmcia slot on top of the motherboard (keyboard side) I shorted pins 3 and 6 with the mains plugged in for about 10 seconds (but the laptop was not switched on) then the laptop switched on and said that it had been reset and to press FN+X to continue.

    It’s possible the update was botched. You could try pressing escape while booting to get the bootloader and then select a different Ubuntu option to boot into. One of them might work..

    As for why might the update be broken I’d need more details..

    That DOS program does not work with my Latitude D630, it asks for a service tag that is 5 letters long, mine is 5 letters and 2 numbers. Have tried it with and without numbers but neither password works.
    What have i done wrong?

    I know some methods.
    1. The best and easiest method: Close OS and shut down the electricity power of computer. Open your computer box, take out the cmos battery from the mainboard. Then the bios password will be reset to blank. Put it back after a few minutes.
    2. Follow some hard tutorials, it is difficult to do. It is better that you are a expert. For example this tutorial: Bypass BIOS Password or Crack CMOS Password?

    So I would suggest you the 1st method. Hope it helps.

    for all those people who keep saying they know some thing about computers:

    YOU SHOULD HAVE the express service code AND the string that appears at the bottom of the screen when prompted to enter a bios password
    i.e. “#5LC4F3J-595B”

    if the system is a dell and is under warranty call: 8668763355
    enter express service tag when prompted.
    when hotline operator picks up introduce yourself as a technician repairing a customers system. they will ask what company or party the system is registered to. you must know the name of the company or person who purchased the system from dell!!!
    they will ask for the ES tag and then the string that appears when prompted for the bios password.
    after a few minutes they will read you the MASTER RESET CODE they generated and then you will need to enter it and hold down LEFT SHIFT while you press the ENTER key twice.

    if the system is a dell and is not under warranty call: 8002884410
    follow the same steps mentioned above.

    Hi Larry,
    I think you could not find the password jumper which is located at the right edge of the motherboard just  below the battery but right sidewise. It is marked as JP1.
    Cmos clear is JP2. So you have to short the JP1 jumper. Hope you are now able to clear the password. Goodluck

      I have pulled the off both JP1 and JP2 and left the battery out overnight but still get the same message at boot up of –
      Type the password and…
      – press <ENTER> to leave password security enabled. 
      – press <CTRL><ENTER> to disable password security.

      and my grandson doesn’t remember what password he used and it
      will not go any farther without the password or trying to disable it

      I tried removing the JP1 jumper again and left it off this time and it disabled the passwords and let me into the computer, I guess I was in to much of a hurry the first time. Thanks for all you did and reminded me of

    Same problem here, i have a Dell Inspiron notebook 1545 which i didn’t use for quite some time. Just tried to update but unable to access the system.
    This is what it says: … -Hard-disk #XE409H11545-595B,  the system Primary HDD, is protected by a password authentication system. You cannot acces data on this hard drive without the correct password  – …. so i can’t get in. What to do?

    F12 not  functioning, with F2 i can get into the Bios as far as the complete overview, but this is also locked, if  i try to unlock this i get a pop-up screen with:  “Setup Unlock; The administrative password is set on this computer. Setup cannot be accessed until the correct password is entered. If you need to change any setup fields, you m ust first enter the administartive password in this field. Otherwise you can view the vaious settings, and you may be able to change some depending on the way the administrator has configured the system.

    When i got this i just could get in & work with this notebook, and i didn’t put any security-password in it (except windows).

    Can anyone help me out?

    The bootsequence is adjusted and locked as well, so 1st it goes to diskette drive which isn’t there, 2nd internal HDD (which is blocked), 3rd USB storage device, 4th CD/DVD drive & last Onboard NIC.
     I cannot adjust this.

    Same with date & time, which are by the way 2 yrs behind.

    @ security the screens says:
    * Admin password (don’t have a clue)
    * System password is not set
    * Internal HDD password (8 characters, but really don’t know, this wasn’t here before, even tried to connect to my ex which could know more)
    * Password Bypass is disabled
    * Password Change; Allow Non-Admin Password Changes is enabled.

    I bought this system from a company almost 1 yr ago. The company no longer excists, so no ICT-guy overthere with the correct information.

    The service tag is 1BBV9H1, the express service code is 2861844661. There is no system asset tag.

      Every Dell Inspiron has a master password that will clear the BIOS password. You can call “Dell Technical Support” at (800)624-9896 to get this master password.
      You only need to have your “Service Tag” and the “Express Service Code” while taking Dell technical support.

    this work for me in one dell optiflex gx 260
    1. Open the computer cover.

    2. Remove the jumper plug labeled PSWD from the jumper.

    See “Jumper Settings” to locate the password jumper.

    3. Close the computer cover.

    4. Reconnect your computer and devices to electrical outlets and turn them on.

    This disables the existing password(s).

    5. Enter system setup and verify that Setup Password is set to Disabled.

    6. Exit system setup.

    CAUTION: Before you open the computer cover, see “CAUTION: Safety Instructions.”

    7. Open the computer cover.

    8. Replace the PSWD jumper plug.

    9. Close the computer cover and reconnect the computer and devices to electrical outlets and turn them on.

    This reenables the password feature. When you enter system setup, both password options appear as Not Enabled—the password feature is enabled but no password is assigned.

    10. Assign a new system and/or setup password.

    Hi!

    Dell Optiplex 780, user forgot BIOS master password (which is necessary to change the boot order to run BartPE from CD and do an image backup).

    There is a jumper on the mainboard called PSWD1, which is set (shorted). Remove power cable from PC (CMOS battery can stay in place), open the lid. Remove jumper from PSWD1. Reconnect power, start the PC, hit F2 to enter BIOS. All passwords should be reset.

    Leave BIOS, power off the PC, remove power cable. Reattach jumper to PSWD1, close lid, reattach power cable. Start PC. Enjoy.

    It’s not bogus it’s just out of date. Apply a bit of common sense and you could have worked out the answer (as well as finding the information on Dell’s own website and user guides.)
    It’s no longer 3 pins, this is true. It’s only 2 pins… So what to do? How do we achieve something that has no pins bridged? Oh yeah, remove the jumper! Durr!
    Now switch on the PC and the first message you will get is ‘Password Removed/Reset’
    Also to all those recommending removing the battery to erase the password. It doesn’t have any effect on an Optiplex. You have to either move the jumper (3 pin) or remove the jumper (2 pin).
    Once password if reset, place the jumper back where you found it…

    nether one of them worked for me.

    this laptop is owned  by a friend of mine, who’s wife has had ..how to say this gently..some mental problems .

    and she wound up putting a password on it that she can’t remember or find the paper that she wrote it on (about a year ago).

    do you know of any Hardware procedures like the RTC  type i can try?

    not afraid to open it up but would rather not.
