How do I Change my Hotmail Password?

There are two basic scenarios where you would like your password to change. One is when you have forgotten the password to your account and need to recover it and the second is when you just need a change of password. This can be because you think that someone may have managed to get access to your password or you want to adhere to good practices of changing your password periodically.

1. Changing from an old to a new password

The following steps show in detail how to change your password when you already know your current password.

It is important to note that changing your Hotmail password will change your password for all of Windows Live personalized services, such as Windows Live Messenger or Myspace.

In order to change your password:

  1. Sign in to your Windows Live Hotmail Account.
  2. Click "My account" at the right of the home page of your Windows Live Page. You may be asked to sign in again. Enter your password and click Sign in.
  3. In your "Account Summary", just below password reset information click on change next to password.
  4. A screen will appear where you will be asked to provide your old password. You will then be required to type in a new password and then retype it again for confirmation.

Note: Make sure you enter a strong password. Passwords are case sensitive (so EXAMPLE, ExaMPle, and example are not the same).

  1. Click the "Save" button to save your new password. You will then be taken to the login page where you can now login with your new password.

2. Recover a forgotten password

If however you need to change your password because you have forgotten it, then you need to click on the Forgot password link just below where you would normally sign in from.

  1. You will be taken to a page where you need to match the characters in the picture. This proves that you are a human being and not a computer program. Click on continue.
  2. You will then be given two options to reset your password. One is to send yourself a password reset email message and the other is to use your secret question.
  3. If you choose the first option, hotmail will email you a password at your alternate email address.
  4. If however you choose the second option, you will be taken to a page where you need to confirm your account information.

  5. You will then need to fill in your Country, State and zip code exactly as you did when you first signed up. You will also need to enter the answer to your secret question. Click on continue.
  6. If the information is correct, you will be taken to a page where you can now enter a new password. Fill in this information and click on continue.
  7. Once your password has been changed, if you do not have an alternate email address, Hotmail will prompt you to optionally create one:

Make sure you choose your password carefully and keep it safe. If possible, do not write it down because it is easier for people to get access to it. Let it be your secret. To help protect your personal information, change your password regularly.
