DSS is Direct Satellite System.

DSS is a proprietary video and audio distribution system utilized by DirecTV.

DirecTV DSS systems broadcast over Ku Band.

DSS utilizes the Viterbi and Reed-Solomon algorithms for error detection and correction, with variable rate forward error correction to squeeze the maximum available bandwidth out of each satellite transponder.

DSS uses the VideoGuard conditional access system from NDS.

DSS uses a proprietary video encoding scheme, largely because it predates MPEG-2. DSS is very similar to, but not compatible with, the final MPEG-2 standard.

The primary audio encoding system used by DSS is Musicam, although DSS also optionally supports AC3.
