What is an LEC?

An LEC (Local Exchange Carrier) is a local telephone company.

An LEC provides telephone service within a LATA.

To handle InterLATA long-distance calls, the LEC will connect to an IXC (IntereXchange Carrier).

An LEC that is also an RBOC may be referred to as an ILEC, or Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier.
